How to prep your smile for your wedding photoshoot (and the big day)

In Singapore your wedding photos often come one to three months before the wedding — so your smile has two big days. The easy way to prep it, plus natural-smile tips from Dr Pearlyn Ng.

Somewhere between the venue, the dress, and a seating chart that’s quietly driving you up the wall, there’s one little thing that’s going to turn up in almost every photo: your smile.

The lovely news? Getting it ready is one of the easiest — and most fun — jobs on the whole wedding list. A little planning and a few happy tricks, and you’re set.

Your smile actually has two big days

Couples often shoot their wedding photos one to three months before the wedding itself — so I always remind my patients that their smile really has two big days, not one. And that’s good news: it gives us a calm, unhurried run-up to each.

So we plan backwards from your photoshoot date first, then keep things fresh for the wedding. Here’s how.

Prepping your smile professionally

Most of what helps is gentle, quick, and best done with a little time to spare. Counting back from your photoshoot:

  • Around two to three weeks before the shoot — if whitening is something you’d like, this is the sweet spot. It gives any short-lived sensitivity time to settle, and lets the shade look its natural, even best on camera.
  • About a week before the shoot — book a professional clean and polish. Your smile turns up fresh and bright, with everything feeling comfy and settled by shoot day.
  • As early as you can — been meaning to sort a little chip, gap, or a tooth that’s never quite sat right? Start well ahead, so your smile feels completely like you long before anyone points a camera at it.

Then, closer to the wedding itself, a quick clean and polish — and a whitening top-up if you’d like one, timed the same way — keeps everything looking lovely for the day. Easy.

Smiling tips for a beautifully natural smile

On the dayThe best smiles happen when you forget the camera's even there.

Here’s a fun secret: half of a gorgeous wedding smile has nothing to do with your teeth at all. It’s about feeling relaxed. And helping people find their most natural smile is honestly what I do every single day — so these are my favourite little tricks, the same ones the best photographers swear by:

  • Say “money”, not “cheese”. “Cheese” pulls your mouth sideways into that stiff, frozen look. Softer words like “money” — or even “yoga” — lift your lips up naturally.
  • Keep your teeth a tiny bit apart. About a pinky-finger’s width does it. It reads as easy and warm rather than clenched.
  • Breathe out first. A slow exhale right before the shutter clicks melts away the nervous tension.
  • Think of your person. The best smiles land a half-second after someone says “smile” — when you catch your partner’s eye and forget the camera’s even there.

The warmest smile in the whole album is almost never the one you posed for. It’s the one that just happened.

Little touches for shoot day (and the big day)

A few tiny things make a surprisingly big difference once the cameras come out — handy for both your shoot and your wedding:

  • Pop on a creamy, non-sticky lip balm. Skip anything super matte or drying — it can dull your smile, and your lips love the moisture.
  • Sip water through the day. A hydrated smile simply looks brighter and fresher in photos.
  • Have a quick mirror practice beforehand. Find the smile that feels most like you, and own it all day.

A smile you’ll love looking back on

Here’s the part we love most. A wedding photo isn’t just for the day — it lives on walls, in albums, in the hands of people who weren’t even born yet.

So the smile we help you prepare isn’t a brand-new one borrowed from somebody else. It’s yours, looking its happiest and most natural — the kind you’ll still recognise years from now, when your kids are flipping through the album one day.
